During EURO 2016 I sketched moments that caught my eye, using each piece as a chance to practice and have some fun. I did a similar project for World Cup 2018.
#iseefootballeverywhere
In 2012 I was developing a Jamie Carragher poster and not wanting to use the official Carlsberg logo as the shirt sponsor I altered it to read Carragher instead. A few months later I was casually looking at the Guardian newspaper logo and noticed it wasn’t far off Guardiola. Then I saw that IKEA, visual shorthand for Swedish innovation could snugly fit Ibra, the nickname of Swedish sporting icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic. From there I saw Pirlo fit Pirelli, Sky Sports fit MTV and it started to snowball.
I posted the first batch on social media under the hashtag #iseefootballeverywhere. People, evidently engaged, started to make many clever suggestions so I started mocking up the best suggestions in amongst the ones I was devising myself. To this day if you follow the hashtag on Twitter or Instagram there is a lot of pieces made by others which is exhilarating to me.
The project ended up being featured on Soccer AM, in FourFourTwo magazine, Soccerbible, on JOE.co.uk and in Corriere Dello Sport amongst others.
