I was desperate to improve my portrait skills. Absolutely desperate. There’s only so many times I can attempt to wing a portrait for a client job only to come up short. I may get the head shape, but what’s this, the eyes are just off. I’ve got the smile but this jaw just isn’t right. And lo, then appeareth the gird.
I worked out an extremely vague grid system where I’d place a dot at the edge of the eye and then a line where the skull tapers off. These basic structures allowed me to freely draw within a scaffold of sorts. I’m still figuring out the process but so far the results are above my usual output. I used whatever match was on that evening to provide my subjects and I just had fun drawing.
