My favourite client job is an artwork for social media commissioned by Liverpool Football Club. Art direction and artwork concept were provided by Dave Will. You can find the online work here - 26th April 2019.
The premise was to illustrate the many songs the Anfield crowd sing during matches. Dave had the idea to present them as LP covers which allowed the artwork a lot of space. Players, the manager, and specific chants were given the LP treatment which allowed for different skills to get a workout, namely design and illustration.
All in all there were eight covers made; Firmino, Salah, Mane, Van Dijk, Klopp, When The Reds Go Marching In, Allez Allez Allez and You’ll Never Walk Alone. Each gave a fun opportunity to create bespoke artwork and an accompanying layout.
To further build on the theme of vintage LP covers, I developed a colour halftone overlay to give the look of printed items and then made a wear and tear distressed look to apply to the sleeves. By stacking the LPs in a haphazard way and applying a small shadow under each, a sense of depth was added. You can view the artwork in full below.
You can browse the individual LP artwork below, I made special effort to keep narrow colour palettes on each so they came together in a nice jumble of colours. The aim was to provide a lot for the eye to take in. I used ‘The Weeknd’ cover artwork for Star Boy as the inspiration for Salah. The rest was off the cuff.
Below is a pre-crop version of the artwork to give a sense of the work behind the scenes.
