After a lockdown year of making full body sketches and neglecting faces I had a splurge of portraits. The full set start halfway through this post, the following few images are earlier pieces made in the spirit of this style to show progression. They embody some of the central elements of the current style such as only retaining interior line work, some exaggeration of features, bold colour choices and a use of hair as a something let off the leash to contrast the neat line work of the facial features.

This new set begins in Feb 2021. I’ve listed the things I was trying below.
- sticking white beside darker colours for a larger visual range in the image
- richer shading
- erasing lines where they don’t need to be
- being more expressive with the drawings
- using the backgrounds for contrast / emphasis
